The Broken Beds unit is a very peculiar rock formation found in the Purbeck Limestone Group. Its origin has been discussed since the 19th century and the current accepted interpretations are that it resulted from the dissolution of underlying evaporites (gypsum and anhydrite) and later remobilised by tectonic forces during a compression event known as the Alpine inversion.
